The Role
We are seeking an Indirect Tax Specialist to support Tundra’s indirect tax compliance, reporting, and advisory needs across Canada, the United States, and select international jurisdictions. This role will focus primarily on US sales & use tax and GST/HST, PST/QST, ensuring accurate tax application on client billings, timely filings, and ongoing compliance with indirect tax legislation applicable to staffing and professional services.
The Indirect Tax Specialist will work closely with Finance, Billing, Payroll, Legal, and external tax advisors to maintain strong indirect tax controls, support audits, and improve processes as Tundra continues to scale globally.
Indirect Tax Compliance
- Prepare, review, and/or support the filing of US state sales & use tax, Canadian GST/HST, PST/QST and International jurisdictions returns (i.e. France, Singapore, UK, Ireland)
- Ensure indirect tax is correctly calculated and applied on client invoices, including treatment of W?2, 1099, and incorporated contractor arrangements where applicable.
- Reconcile indirect tax accounts and investigate variances between ERP, tax engine (if applicable), and filed returns.
Taxability & Transaction Support
- Analyze taxability of services by jurisdiction, including sourcing rules, nexus considerations, and exemptions relevant to the staffing industry.
- Support internal stakeholders with real-time guidance on indirect tax implications for new clients, new service offerings, and cross-border transactions.
- Maintain and update indirect tax matrices and documentation supporting tax decisions.
Audit & Notice Management
- Assist with indirect tax audits, reviews, and information requests from tax authorities.
- Prepare supporting documentation, reconciliations, and responses in coordination with external advisors.
- Track audit findings and support remediation of identified issues.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Work with Billing and Finance teams to ensure correct tax configuration in Microsoft Dynamics and related systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, controls, and automation to reduce risk and manual effort.
- Support testing and validation of tax logic during system updates or process changes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Finance, Payroll, HR, Legal, and external accountants to ensure consistent indirect tax treatment across the organization.
- Assist with training and guidance for internal teams on indirect tax best practices and compliance requirements.
Who You Are
- You have 3–6+ years of experience in indirect tax, sales tax, VAT/GST, or related tax compliance roles (industry or public accounting).
- You have knowledge of US sales & use tax and Canadian indirect taxes (GST/HST, PST, QST).
- You have experience assessing taxability of services, preferably within staffing, recruitment, or professional services environments.
- You have experience with ERP systems such as Microsoft Dynamics (or similar), and exposure to tax engines (Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, etc.) is an asset.
- You are comfortable working with data, reconciliations, and supporting documentation to defend tax positions.
- You are highly detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- You are a clear communicator, able to translate indirect tax concepts into practical guidance for non-tax stakeholders.
- You are self-motivated, organized, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, scaling organization.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, CPA student, or indirect tax certification/coursework is an asset.
- Experience supporting US multistate sales tax compliance and/or cross-border services.
- Prior experience in the staffing, recruitment, or professional services industry is an asset.
- Exposure to indirect tax audits or voluntary disclosures.
The salary range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000 – $105,000.
